Traveling Exhibits Available for Rent

The Children's Museum of Memphis has three traveling exhibits available for rent. They were originally designed and constructed by CMOM for the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative (YMEC). These three exhibits have traveled all over the United States and Canada touring various other children's museums.


Exhibit Description

Become an International Space Station (ISS) crewmember for a day and engage in a multitude of astronaut activities in Living in Space. Go out-of-this-world in a hands-on traveling exhibit that features planning a day in space, performing work activities such as a simulated science experiment, engaging in daily living activities such as mealtime or choosing play/free-time activities. Visitors will immerse themselves in this unique space environment as they learn about a day in the life of an ISS crewmember.

Living in Space was designed and built by The Children’s Museum of Memphis for the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative (YMEC).

        

Contents

Living in Space has three distinct areas with accompanying graphics, visuals and labels (in English and Spanish):

  • Living in Space - Shows visitors how different it is to live in space, including food, sleep and hygiene. Includes eat in space, potty in space and sleep in space.

  • Working in Space - Concentrates on crewmembers’ actual work in space such as building and maintaining the ISS, using the special equipment onboard, docking with the space shuttle and more. Includes meet the shuttle, a model for cooperation, Canadarm2, fit for space, floating to work, dress for space and science in space.

  • Play in Space - Shows that living in space is not just all work and no play as astronauts need a break from their busy schedules when they are orbiting Earth. Includes packed with fun and weightless wonders.

Exhibit Description

This hands-on exhibit invites kids of all ages to explore and play games from around the world and across the centuries. As visitors play together, they not only have fun, they also learn about cooperation, build skills, gain knowledge and share memories. Games of strategy, math, luck and physical coordination are all featured. The focal point is an oversized chessboard with giant chess pieces. The exhibit also includes the House of Cards, a games library with over 50 popular contemporary board games visitors can check out and play in the gallery.

This colorful and attractive exhibit is comprised of free-standing panels and components featuring games from around the world, with accompanying graphics, visuals and labels (in English and Spanish). The featured games include:

Exhibit Description

Take a fantastic journey into the homes of people around the world in Your House, My House. This exotic, hands-on traveling exhibit features large houses, portable houses, small houses, houseboats and many other types of houses. Visitors will learn how geography, climate, availability of materials, lifestyle, tradition and culture all influence the kind of house we live in.

Your House, My House has four themed areas with accompanying graphics, visuals and labels (in English and Spanish):

  • My House - Step inside three model homes: a Mongolian herder's ger, an m'bure from the tropics of Fiji and a stilt house from a Malaysian fishing village. Fun activities in each house setting help children make connections between what happens in their own homes with what happens in these houses.

  • Houses Houses Everywhere - Compare similarities in houses scattered all over the globe and match houses to their environments.

  • Design Center - Use a drafting table and architect's tools to draw your dream house and put house parts together on a computer.

  • Build Your Own - Build tabletop houses from various materials or build a timber house you can enter.
